Future Breedings
Breedings are planned months and years in advance. A lot more goes into a breeding than can possibly be illustrated here. But here's a taste into what goes on behind the pedigree formula's you see as beauties in the pictures on this site.
This represents the next stage of Hawkwind's breeding program as envisioned at this time. If a particular breeding is of interest to you, please contact us.
This page will be updated when girls are bred, or puppies arrive! Check Current Litter.
Puppies should excel in all the qualities Hawkwind finds critical.

Later this year or early 2009 we're considering a breeding with CH Hawkwind's Emerald Jade. We'd like to preserve her strength and are looking at a 'purist' working pedigree for her. There is no doubt she is one of our strongest producers.
Topaz has been bred to Hawkwind's Snowflake Obsidian. She is one of the super-movers in our kennel and we expect to preserve shoulders and the power and strength both of these Hawkwind dogs represent.

Below, Hawkwind's Sapphire Onyx was bred to Ch Hawkwind's Mont Blanc BISS. Puppies due December 14, 2007
Ch Hawkwind Rocks the Gene Pool has been bred to Ch Hawkwind's Alabaster Carrara. Puppies due in November.
I've had so many requests about plans and this girl or that....I hope this gives some small insight into the girls we're considering.
Yes, another Amethyst litter is possible. No decision yet....
Linebreeding on Amethyst ancestors creates a strong pedigree we can bring back into our girls a couple generations down ...
Next year we're planning a purist breeding again. We're close to a decision on the dogs, but that is a secret for those who are interested in that level of our breeding program.
When thinking things out on this level, it's not just about creating great dogs. We've been carefully putting selective pressure on good genetics for years now, and in viewing the breed we feel we can go outward and linebreed the strength back in.
But it is essential we keep the power consolidated in pure-power pedigrees as well. Our intention is to keep creating stronger and stronger pedigrees....and samoyeds!
We feel that genetics is starting to be a huge issue in the breed. Our beautiful dogs need to be carefully kept OUT of certain pedigrees to maintain the health we enjoy! Does that sound harsh? When risky breeding is done, the result is a pedigree you cannot clean up easily. It is harder to go this road, but keeping to the best genetics we can and not introducing known issues is the path we try to take....this is the 'High Road' of dog breeding.
Our goal is to keep the best of the breed as pure as we can....and mentor those who want to take the pure strains into the future.
Thank you to those of you who have demonstrated the dedication to keep the Samoyed a strong and healthy breed!
To those of you who have some of our best show and working dogs...our most sincerest thanks. The ancient breed can survive in it's pure form....

BREEDING IN THE PLANNING STAGES:
Decision made to breed Amethyst to Cobalt...here's his picture.
Below: CH Seamist's Amethyst of Hawkwind
.jpg)
Amethyst's first litter was back in 2002. Her children ALL placed at the national, some more than once. It was in the end an All Champion litter.
Hawkwind's Palomino Onyx: 3rd Futurity 2002, 2nd AmBred 2003.
Hawkwind's Dreams of Malachite: 3rd AmBred 2003. 4th Novice Weightpull 2004.
Hawkwind's Alabaster Carrara: 2nd Ambred 2004. (Thanks to Mona Rauen for letting us take him out to his first national!)
CH Hawkwind's Emerald Jade: 3rd Bred By Bitch 2003, and Award of Merit 2004.
Amethyst's pedigree is TIGHTLY linebred. First breeding from her was a linebreeding to assure we had her qualities in their purist form into the future. With 2 girls from that, it's certain we can maintain the genetic strength, beauty, and structural qualities we desire.
Hawkwind's Alabaster Carrara was bred to our Madonna in 2004.
Amethyst's first litter has 2 boys in working homes. Watch the agility statistics for Hawkwind's Alabaster Carrera and Hawkwind's Dreams of Malachite. In the conformation ring at 14 months old, Hawkwind's Palomino Onyx has a 4 point specialty major under Denny Kodner, and a couple major reserves, one under Lynette Blue at a specialty as well. She got her 2nd major and sits ready to finish in 2005.
Hawkwind's Emerald Jade finished with all majors, most notable is the 5 point specialty major under Mardee Ward-Fanning, a Best of Breed over top 20, BIS and BISS specials, and a Best in Sweeps. In 2004 she was down to the final 7 considered for Best of Breed, so garnered ANOTHER Award of Merit for our kennel. Their half brother was Best of Breed at the national.
At the 2003 SCA National in Riverside, CA, Amethyst was 3rd in a Brood Bitch class of 20, while her daughters both placed in their respective classes as well. Onyx was 2nd in AmBred and Jade was 3rd in Bred By (class of 28). Hawkwind's Dreams of Malachite was 3rd in Ambred. As phenomenal as the daughters of CH Wolf River's Raptor Ridge have proven themselves to be, we are drawn to look at genetic diversity and beautifully blended pedigrees into the future.
A pedigree such as Amethyst's is perfect for an outcross. That means breeding into a pedigree that is further removed from the HER background. The challenge in that is:
Structure ... a strong pedigree for movement and it's components. While better fronts and rears are always great, not losing sidegait and perfect timing is important as well. Foremost: PROPER PROPORTION. 55% leg length is a MUST for any breeding we consider. Amethyst is well within standard so there's no issue there. Time and again we see people breed for 'quick winners' and into pedigrees that will never hold genetic power into the future. At Hawkwind we are concerned about the future as well as the present.
Genetics ... not compromising the strength we have. Our kennel has strong hip and eye records.
Temperament ... well, we have the best in the breed ... so let's keep it!
Type .... closely connected to structure, an arctic dog that can work all day needs certain qualities. Good feet. Double coat of good quality as the standard describes. Amethyst has what is called a 'short working coat,' which is totally proper as long as it is double coated and of proper quality with silver tips.
Headtype for survival in the arctic: Amethyst exhibits perfect ear and eye set, perfect stop, muzzle length and depth, strong underjaw ... In short, much of perfect head type is here.
And she can work. Deep chest and tuck up as described in the standard... Plus the willingness to work. And the frosting of a beautiful Samoyed smile!
Outcrosses are always a challenge. Any gene pool brought in must exhibit many of the above qualities, and 'click' or blend with our girls across the board, not just in ONE breeding. So we look at history for times these sorts of outcrosses have been done and down several generations (if possible) if any health issues came up.
Finally, any pedigree we consider must have a LOT of beautiful moving, typey dogs in it. If I don't like how the dogs move and they don't look like Samoyeds, it doesn't matter! We are NOT breeding teddy bears. We're breeding arctic dogs who lived with and loved their 'pack,' canine and human.
SO it's quite a search to look at THIS level of breeding in our kennel.
Amethyst produced phenomenally bred to CH Wolf River's Raptor Ridge. We decided in the end to breed to his son, Hawkwind's Cobalt Moonstone. This brings in some new blood, but solidifies what we already know works. Further, it blends some beautiful heads and bodies.
Back in Cobalt's pedigree: On the sire side the outcross is to this dog, Can. CH Polar Mist Break the Bank BIS. He is Cobalt's great-grandsire.

Dam side outcrosses to this bitch, CH Charisma-Omni Front Page News BISS, who has relatives behind the above dog's pedigree. Page is Cobalt's grandmother.

So this pedigree is a linebreeding of these two dogs into a pedigree which has Wolf River's strength for the remaining (more than) 3/4 of the pedigree. These lines have proven over time to produce such phenomenal temperament and structure. Time will tell if this breeding is as stunning as we think it will be! If you are interested in having one of Amethyst's children, please contact us.
