PUPPIES! The future of our breeding program lies in the great homes we entrust our babies to!

Dogs available now....
Male, 6 months old.

Also a 3 and a half year old spayed female, full Wolf River/Hawkwind pedigree to the right home.

Reservations now are for the fall litter due in September.

If you are interested in a Hawkwind puppy, please fill out a questionnaire and contact us at hawkwindsams@cs.com. Then call us at 952.367.6496 within a couple days. cellular 10am/10pm CST

Upcoming breedings in the next year+ are as we project and like most things, there are no guarantees on when we can get puppies. Occasionally a breeding misses, or the puppies are all show dogs and no pets are available in a particular litter.

The average wait is 4-6 months for a Hawkwind puppy.

If someone wants a pet boy and all we have are pet girl reservations, those DO get filled more quickly. It happened last year. One gal wanted a pet of either sex and of the 2 boys, one was graded as a pet and went to her within a few weeks of her application. But that is unusual.

Our stud dogs have puppies around the country and occasionally we can refer you to a Hawkwind 'sired' puppy not raised by us. We also work with several breeders on co-ownerships, and we strive for a similar philosophy, but not all puppies are raised at Hawkwind anymore. For security reasons we are not listing exactly where dogs are, and often can move dogs around the country easily depending upon our show schedule.

Our co ownerships are in Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Wisconsin, Missouri, etc.

Reservations taken now are expected to be fulfilled Fall/Winter, 2008.

Reservations are filled for those that have deposits in for puppies FIRST. We often 'grow up' puppies to see how they may or may not fit into our breeding program. So we sometimes have a puppy in the 4-6 month range that may go as a pet or show dog.

Contact us at hawkwindsams@cs.com if you're interested in a puppy or adult.

Currently we are doing referrals for 2 litters.

Most people will wait for a dog raised by us for one of several reasons:

+Temperament
+The way we raise samoyeds
+ Health records (We have 12 OFA Excellent ratings out of 27 dogs registered, which is among the strongest kennel records in the country. We have never bred a dyplastic samoyed. We have never had a diagnosis of juvenile cataracts.)
+Our support throughout the life of your samoyed. We have a family list with vet techs, trainers, etc., so you have 24/7 resources to information, and the cell phone number to get us 24 hours a day for ANY question on your puppy's health or behavior.
+Or because they are beautiful Samoyeds!

While we often have a waiting list, we can take reservations for boys and girls now.

We hope this answers some of the questions we've had lately. We have several girls that are at the end of their breeding careers, so will do more breeding than we normally do within the next year. Some of those litters are on co ownership and will be raised in other Hawkwind homes.

Process for getting a Hawkwind puppy:

* Fill out the application.
*Interview by phone within a week. Approved homes only.
*Deposit in for Working, Show, or pet puppies for either a particular litter, or next available. Girl, boy or first available. Deposits are non refundable and you will be offered a puppy.
*Show and Working dogs are chosen first.
*Puppies are matched to the home, but we go in order of when the deposit came in for the most part, knowing that the PERFECT match is our goal.

Feel free to call anytime to check on the status of your reservation or questionnaire. 952.367.6496 10/10 CST.

Breedings are subject to change depending upon many variables. Since we've had a lot of requests for 'what' we are doing next, here is roughly the possible matings we're considering at this time:

Aster, Hawkwind's Alabaster Madonna has been bred to Nikko, Hawkwind's Snowflake Obsidian. Pregnancy confirmed and puppies due early    September.

Electra (above) has been bred to Rocco (below) Puppies due late September.

Hawkwind's Obsidian Electraglide HCT - CH Hawkwind's Moroccan Marble

Sapphire, Hawkwind's Sapphire Onyx, will be bred in 2008.

photo

Jade (CH Hawkwind's Emerald Jade) will be bred again on her next season.

Agate (above) will be bred (when her clearances are complete) to Hawkwind's Snowflake Obsidian sometime in 2009

Amethyst, CH Seamist's Amethyst of Hawkwind. Stud dog to be announced.

Jade will be bred again in the fall of 2008.

Topaz & Ben puppies born December 3, 2007 One boy available.

Puppies from Summit X Onyx. We're deciding on show/companion homes now....

Tanzanite litter on 1-19-2008. Thanks to the Dice's for these pics. The kids had a fun evening and were actually tired when we got home! Starting off is Blue Boy mugging for the camera!

Tanzanite Silver Boy

More of Silver Boy, honestly, he is a rompin' and stompin' puppy most of the time. These are just odd pensive moments! And if you put up a barrier he just can't contain himself and makes quite a fuss to get over it. So don't let these quiet shots fool you!

Finally got all the littershots from Aster's litter up. Scroll down to see them all! (Yes, we incorrectly identified one puppy the first time....for those following closely...these are all correct now! So we're not telling if you don't remember who it was...) See the news page for a couple pictures from the puppy day! A dozen people were in on the cuddling!

Getting out the pine shavings and beginning potty box training Aster's kids. No, they don't get it yet. But consistently putting them in the potty box every time they wake up will work eventually!

December 6, 2006
Congratulations to Summit (CH Hawkwind's Mont Blanc BISS) and Jade (CH Hawkwind's Emerald Jade) on their 11 puppies born today! 7 girls and 4 boys and one tired mom! We did lose one precious boy, which was a great sadness. It is frankly a shock to  have a litter this large.

These kids have quite similar pedigrees and the culmination of our breeding program so far. We're quite excited to see how they mature. We expect another step up in both breed type and structure.

December 3, 2006
Everyone's eyes are open! Lots of chortling in the puppy pen!

December 1, 2006
Silver girl's eyes are opening....she's the first. They still cannot hear.

Meeting a friend tonight she latched onto her chin and tried to nurse. She's surprisingly strong! We all laughed at the tenacity of this little girl, but it probably did hurt!

November 26, 2006
The puppies are gaining FAST. Almost double weight now, and very strong. They still cuddle into a sweater we keep in the whelping box to nap between nursings. Puppies at this stage can nurse every 20 minutes or so.  All day and all night.... Sleep, potty, nap....

Today we got caught up on nail clipping. Handling each baby every day is important. While they cannot see, associations with the smell of humans should be very pleasurable if possible. After nail clipping we are careful to pet them and cuddle a little. Dogs that don't cuddle with humans as young dogs sometimes never do. While naturally strongly connected to humans,  the stage is set for close contact by daily cuddling, along with the enveloping feeling of wool sweaters. Aster was raised this way and relishes close contact. Nancy calls Aster 'her mink stole.' At night she likes to be close and curl over the top of the pillow of her favorite humans. (She never crowds.) Main socialization really occurs from 3 weeks to 12 weeks, and to some extent continues to 18 weeks. That is why the breeder of a litter is so critical. The most important time in a puppy's life is before they go to a new home.

While still sleeping next to them every night, it's more for convenience for Aster as she runs outside or needs a bowl of milk or more water.  The amount of liquid needed at this time is tremendous. She is still producing more milk than even 8 puppies can drink. Twice last night I put the babies on Aster to decrease the size of her breasts.  Nancy and I cuddle them and their personalities are starting to come through.

In Minnesota today we have rain after days of 50 degrees. In gorgeous Oregon the litter's sire was training today. Lightning (BISS Can/Am CH Wolf River's Moonlight Ridge WSMX HCT CGC JHD) is on the far side of the lead dogs. Run today by Linda Von Hannekan Martin, who co owns Lightning with Kay Hallberg. Looks like fun! We think we spy Serena in the basket!

To see Lightning as a young puppy, go to http://wolfpacks.com/lightning/index.htm.

November 25, 2006 (Scroll down to puppy pictures....November 23.)
Litter notes: Dewclaws were done on Friday. Vet said the puppies were certainly being well fed!

What she doesn't know is that Aster only likes certain things. Carrots. Bananas. Cold milk....etc. Today half a raw chicken. Pork neck.  The eternal AFS which ALWAYS works...

The things she does NOT want sit in the bowl endlessly.

Pigment is coming in so the noses are all spotted as of yesterday.

Purple girl still has opinions ...

November 22, 2006
Aster said we can see them tomorrow...

November 21, 2006
Aster had bananas and milk for breakfast. Late night snacks were turkey breast, a can of Evo, and AFS, which she loves.  Then we had banana pancakes, more AFS, yogurt, etc. She's eating well.

Best nurser award today goes to Red Boy. A very strong puppy. Put him on a nipple and he digs in.

Most stubborn puppy, is Purple Girl. She acts exactly like her Mom. She isn't eating as much as we'd like as she has to go to the exact nipple SHE wants and not one you pick out for her.

Kids are good, and quite a quiet crew. But then Aster comes from a litter of quiet puppies. Aster is being an exceptional mom, and the puppies are clean and content.

November 20, 2006
Aster's puppies are coming!

8am Red Boy
Arrived silently. Aster didn't even make a sound and I was just laying in bed near her. But she was in a crate. Then I heard a puppy cry!

8:10am Green Boy
Very strong...both boys actually.

9:13am Lavendar Girl

9:21am Silver Girl
Arrived without a sack. Just a bit gurgly at first.

9:52 am Pink Girl
Wow, some of these girls are VERY pretty! A bit smaller girl I think.

12:18 pm Blue boy... just a bit harder to get started. Another ice white puppy that is going to be very pretty!

We're missing a couple placentas and hope they come along soon...

Aster has had half a gallon of milk, a potty break and half a pound of AFS. Oh. And some ice cream. She is now resting quietly getting ready for the last ones...

1:59 Gold Boy These are going to be gorgeous babies!

Waiting on #8. She's napping for a bit and deserves a good nap!

3:21 pm and here comes Purple Girl. She looks the most like Aster. Strong little thing to be the 8th of her litter! She came out attached to her placenta, which mean she 'hung' there for a moment.

We're missing a bunch of placentas. So evidently these last few puppies made their way around them.

Mom's resting, and then we go into the vet for a check up! We need a clean out shot for those placentas.

Aster's eating and drinking well, and is being a perfect Mom! If a bit tired!

November 19, 2006
Aster's puppies are starting to move down. She's resting in the whelping box with her own TV and privacy now. While she enjoys going into the private puppy yard and nesting in the Igloo out there, I  have yet to inform her she is not having babies OUTSIDE.

Her first choice of whelping den was under the juniper bushes by the front door. Oh, I don't think so....

Aster is still eating a little, which usually means we have at least 24 hours to go. She ate almost half a lb. of meat today, which is far less than she'll eat soon.

The temperatures took a bit of a dip yesterday to 99.8, which is not enough of a  drop to indicate labor approaching. Today we're back up over 100. from 6am to 6pm as I write this.

Aster took one deep 10 minute nap. That is the next sign we're looking for as girls usually sleep 'deep' as they get ready. Her abdomen has dropped and we think the puppies are just starting to move back into position for whelping.

November 18, 2006
Vet xray says at least 8 puppies. On one hand I'm delighted that the people who have waited so long for a Hawkwind baby can get one! (Our last litters were a single girl and a litter of two.)

But 8 is a lot of puppies for a first breeding, so I watch her closely. Aster loves to be nearby. It's her nature to be close. Her devoted nature is part of her charm. It's hard for her now as she cannot jump up and down from the bed, so we're getting her new accomodations ready.

As I said on the news page, this is the Star Garnet litter, which is a stone mined in Idaho, where the babies were conceived. Star Garnets display asterism, showing a four-rayed star in reflected light. I like to think of them as having been shot by lightning.

Garnet has been dubbed the gem of faith, constancy and truth. It is a stone of passion and courage. In ancient times it was used to repel evil thoughts, the evil eye, and those with evil intent. Garnet is said to give healing, strength and protection.  Sometimes garnets are exchanged by friends to ensure they will meet again.

So we have two qualities; "the stone of health," transmuting negative energy to balance, and "the stone of commitment" to purpose, to others, and to oneself. Star Garnet is a stone of devotion.

The Star Garnets will arrive soon, bringing more of the constancy of the heart of the Samoyed into the world.

Topaz and Siku give us the beautiful Tourmaline girl! This is a precious girl for our kennel, and a singleton litter. See her on her page, Tourmaline.

July 30, 2006
Pictures.... Here is the baby girl. Pigment is coming in really fast.

And here is the boy...kissed by mom Amethyst!

You would not believe this puppy. He's a superstar even at this age. Talks a lot and just has that ability to grab all the attention available! The girl is quieter, but still that same good natured mewing and cuddling.  Very sweet kids! But of course that is what we expect from Amethyst and why she is such an incredible foundation girl!

July 22, 2006
Amethyst gave us one boy and one girl from Lexi! Gorgeous babies, but on the larger side for our kennel! They chortle constantly. Just talking and chattering and mewing and cooing. Very happy kids!

June 28, 2006

Haven't had the time to update this lately! Contact us for details and pedigrees. We're currently taking reservations for show and companion puppies.

Amethyst's beau is this beautiful boy! Shown here with a national Award of Merit. Below is the day Amethyst became a champion in 2003.

Vet report is she is pregnant and due in July. This breeding is a linebreeding on the Wolf River part of the sire's pedigree, but indicates a significant outcross for us. We're setting up the next stage of our breeding program, which is to linebreed in from another direction the power we already possess.  The future intention is to take that back around into the combinations, such as those in the next breeding, which is the 'recipe' we've used for awhile now.

It's hard to argue with what works!

Next breeding:

Topaz was bred to Siku. This is Siku, last year taking Best of Breed from the classes over specials, and below is Topaz in one of her major wins. She's got 10 points, both majors and Best of Breed from the classes over BISS specials. She'll take a show break and come out after this litter.

Siku (CH Hawkwind's Alabaster Carrara) X Topaz (Hawkwind's Egyptian Blue Topaz)

This breeding doubles on gorgeous rears and great shoulder layons. This breeding is the pairing of two of the best shoulders in our entire kennel. These puppies will MOVE and sport an over 3/4 Wolf River pedigree for great temperaments, power and structure, and genetic strength. We EXPECT great sidegait.

This combination of Madonna/Indigo bred to Amethyst kids has worked before, producing the 2005 Grand Futurity Winner, BISS CH Hawkwind's Mont Blanc. Siku was the sire of that breeding as well. This brings in even more structural power; an Indigo daughter out of CH Wolf River's Raptor Ridge. These temperaments are just divine for living with, working and showing.

We're very excited about this year's selections for our pedigree program. We're planning one more perhaps. Summit's sister, Hawkwind's Alabaster Madonna.

May 28, 2006
We have one male puppy available from the Chi Granite breeding. Black boy. Contact us by sending a questionnaire please! It's hard to get me by phone. He's 11 weeks now. Here's an earlier picture of him. He looks a great deal like Summit did at this age.  But he could end up loking like Grandad, Sullie. Oodles of lovely, very harsh, quality coat; a very pretty puppy! Perfect front end just a 'go get em' attitude! Would be great for agility or herding or sledding. He has opinions about everything and gets along with all dogs, big and small, famously. This is the one that has all that charisma and pizzazz anyone could ever desire! Especially in a show ring! He just stops people in their tracks when they see him live! Gotta love star quality!

What a beautiful day! 70's, partly sunny. Can you say sunburn? Today we decided to take the kids outside into the 'big' yard. This is pink girl checking it out!

The big yard is like a park. Woods around and a marsh out back. These shots were done down by the big oak and park bench. We had some people over to do some 'socializing' as well as do a grooming lesson on a yearling girl. Yes, we took some pictures! Be sure to check the News page for a couple more puppy shots...

So here are the Granite/Chi kids....Four and a half weeks.

Up close and personal.

April 8, 2006
Four years ago I was driving back from Wolf River with Chi as a baby.  These kids are certainly coming along nicely! Outside for the first time they did a little whining about the sun, but they were off and exploring. While they obviously still like to be near each other, black and turquoise followed mom into the bigger part of the yard fearlessly. It's truly amazing to think how much early socializing plays in brain and emotional development.

Puppies got their first pork neck bones today....those are a hit!

April 7, 2006
Learning to eat...our philosophy is a bit different than some...we think puppies should have a large variety of different foods. As each food is introduced, the body produces the capacity to digest it.  The reason some people have dogs who get sick if they get anything 'different' is in the intestines. Dogs with only one way to use their enzymes have to have a restricted diet.

Dogs in the wild are not like that! A fresh rabbit here, a dead fish there... a bird snatched out of the air...you get the picture.

Luckily we have some special probiotics we use with puppies for every change. While the babies have (at 3 weeks) slept and played in 6 different areas of the house (including the yard), they also have had as many different foods offered.

We feel a variety is healthier long term, but the introduction  must be when the dogs are strong and healthy, and using our special blends of foods and probiotics. At this point, they are looking great!

We're keeping them a bit sequestered now. There is a rumor of a parvo outbreak at shelters, and since we believe in Dr. Dodd's vaccination protocal, we're not taking the babies many places except for little rides here and there.

April 3, 2006
Coming up on 3 weeks old! This stage has it's pros and cons....they coo so pretty! I awaken to adorable chortling. They also pee and poo on their own now! If you look close you can see that there is definite intelligence starting to show through in their eyes.

And the first one to jump out of the puppy box is.....(drum roll) the Blue boy!! Since one thing we're breeding for is agility puppies, this bodes well! We'll try to do more pictures this weekend....they are cuter than cute right now!

March 25, 2006
Proud mom!!! Granite is doing SO well with her kids! Eyes are JUST beginning to open today!

We clip toenails with scissors and dremels...getting them used to different things happening is a part of socialization, plus necessary to keep those toenails short for mom's tummy!

Granite babies have arrived! 5 boys and 2 girls! Easy birth, happy and healthy! They are very pretty babies!

February 18, 2006
Our second breeding for 2006 won't come until almost May, but is the marriage of two powerful winning dogs!

Indigo has already proven herself in the ring with 4 Best in Specialtie Shows, twice National Award of Merit wins, along with group wins and placements.

Her kids have won major after major at specialties, as well as BOB's from the classes, along with a group win, a National Award of Merit daughter, and only more to come.

The breeding we planned for her will feature working temperaments, but also promises to produce top flight show puppies!

We decided to breed into the same pedigree as her previous litter, but added Ch Wolf River's Fata Morgana, the only ROMX bitch in the breed. That means she is the dam of champions and working dogs and is recognized as a significant producer for the Samoyed breed! Morgana is the sister of Ch Wolf River's Diamond Dust ROMC, one of the top stud dogs in the breed in recent years.

One of her strongest sons, Ch Wolf River's Moonlight Ridge WSXM  CGC JHD HDT was our choice this time. Lightning won the top award in the breed; SCA National Best of Breed in 2004 and has multiple Top Sled Dog Awards as well.

We expect an exciting spring as we raise these kids of two top Samoyeds in the breed.

This is Lightning on a pack hike. See more of Lightning at http://wolfpacks.com/lightning/puppies/

Temperament, temperament, temperament....

First breeding this year is out of Hawkwind's Dreams of Malchite NA NAJ! Puppies are due March 14. For reservations, fill out a quesionnaire and contact us at hawkwind@hawkwindsamoyeds.com

This breeding will focus upon working pedigrees and should produce great working dogs! We're very excited to bring the fourth Amethyst/Ridge Samoyed into our breeding program. Chi has proved to be a consumate working dog; herding, sledding, agility, and he's only getting stronger.

His lady love is a girl we've had waiting in the wings who brings in 2 more powerful Wolf River dams to our breeding program, along with a soft, sweet and very intelligent outlook on life.

This  breeding will produce the structure to work, but the focus is breeding the perfect working temperament. We've excelled in the show ring, and now we are looking at more places for our dogs to shine!

We're very excited at this next chapter at Hawkwind!

We have one companion girl who could be shown as a novice show dog, or just be a great pet. Very pretty. Smaller girl with lots of coat. Contact us if interested.

One breeding on deck is scheduled  to be Cobalt to Onyx. We have some other possible plans for 2006.

Both dogs have lovely sidegait and very strong front ends. The combination of Onyx's dam to Cobalt produced some very nice babies....Through a tragic set of circumstances we got one back. This little girl was from that breeding...

So we've done Cobalt's mom to Onyx's brother and that was great. Cobalt's aunt to Onyx's brother produced the Grand Futurity winner (see news page), so this combination puts more emphasis on the strength of structure along with all the other good things we've already seen in these pedigrees.

Linebreeding like this with a proven set of gene combinations that works goes towards solidifying the gains we have made. All the animals we are using  are strong producers for what we want most....the temperament of the Samoyed, and genetic strength...along with true arctic beauty and powerfully athletic bodies.

Due in the dead of winter, we're taking reservations for this special breeding! Please fill out a questionnaire and we're taking deposits for those wanting a Hawkwind baby!

2 weeks old already! Here's a couple of the girls.... Eyes are open, pigment coming in nicely, and personalities are showing up!

March 27, 2005

We're pleased to announce that Indigo is pregnant! She has been bred to Hawkwind's Alabaster Carrara.
Puppies due in April.

This is Indigo's 2nd breeding. With 2 beautiful dogs, how can we go wrong?

Pairing of winning Samoyeds:

Indy appears all over this website. She is, bar none, our top winning bitch! Indigo has won 4 specialties, is a multi group placer and group winner. She has earned National AOM's TWICE. Her first litter produced Cobalt who won his class at the national, and Ariel who was 15-18 Best Intersex in Futurity. Indy is the third generation of BISS winners on her dam's side of the pedigree.

Siku has been busy growing up and playing with his kennelmate, Indigo's agility-sister, Mika. We've only taken him out a few times. One weekend warmup, then to the national where he went 2nd in a tough Ambred class. He didn't even know up and backs or anything! A month later his novice owner took him into the ring for the first time. Siku went WD/BOW/BOS over specials, including 2 national RWD's. First major. The next time we entered him was the Double Exposure specialties where he walked away with a 5 point BOW major. Judge comments include "This dog could be one of the top dogs in the nation." While we appreciate the vote of confidence, Siku is a beloved pet never to go on the road. For now, an easy 8 points and we've only put entries in 4 times .... We don't have him entered again, but we'll look for some nice wins to finish his championship probably in 2005.

Siku's pedigree is nothing short of stunning. Highlights:

* Many ROMC's
*Sire, Raptor Ridge, also sired the 2004 National BISS and AOM, his sister, CH Hawkwind's Emerald Jade.
*Grandmother, Sera, is a National Best in Veteran Sweeps, Best Veteran, and National AOM.
*BISS CH Wolf River's Drumlin, one of the top producing stud dogs in breed history, is on both sides of his pedigree.
*BIS/BISS CH Wolf River's Terra ROMC, who we feel is one of the best Samoyeds ever bred, is Siku's great grandmother, and her brother is his great-grandfather.
*Dam placed in National brood bitch competition 2003.
*Grandsire, CH Wolf River's Diamond Dust, has been top stud oog and won the stud dog class multiple times.

Winning is only a small part of breeding great Samoyeds. We want 100% stunning temperaments, and beautiful dogs who can move and do whatever work is asked of them.

We are very excited with these 2 beautiful dogs. Indy is such a mothering gal, and Siku was always the quietest and sweetest guy. His owner said early on, "Gosh we could have a dozen dogs if they were all as sweet and easy going as this guy!"

Due late April, we're taking reservations for a very special breeding! Please fill out a questionnaire and only those with deposits in are considered for placements.

February 10, 2005

Puppies are beginning to go to homes now. Litter themes are established and I try to help with names.

Teal, a show male, has the first official name:

Hawkwind's Snowflake Obsidian.

Congrats to Lynn and thanks for the pictures!! Here's a fun one of Lynn one time when she helped me clean up and care for the babies....well, it was mostly a lot of laughing and cuddling!!! Thanks for all the help over the last weeks!

February 1, 2005

The shopping spree and puppy basics. Some of the things to consider when you get a new puppy....But first, the MOST essential thing in life! Love and cuddling! We've tried to make sure puppies are cuddled regularly. We've had over 20 people of all ages to play with babies.

The ability to bond to humans is developed by direct association and it begins seriously at about 3 weeks.

Now to get on with puppy info....Get enrolled in a puppy kindergarten class. You know how to train a dog? This is not for that. It's so you can continue the socialization we started here at Hawkwind. Babies need to learn how to interact with other dogs so if they run into an aggressive dog they give the right signals and so they can practice playing. This is for controlled situations, not as risky as a park. ONE bad experience at a tender age makes a big difference.

We use dozens of new situations so your puppy has learned that the world is safe. Mild stress, then hugs and cuddles. This is a continuation of that. Life happens, it's all OK....

The first few weeks are not so much for training as bonding and fun! Let your baby know s/he is loved and safe. Start some basics, but a puppy is a BABY.

READ. BEFORE the baby comes. Culture Clash by Joan Donaldson.
How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With by Rutherford and Neil.
I Just Got a Puppy. What Do I Do? Mordecai Siegal & Matthew Margolis. (But forget the 'training collar' info....go to a positive class.)

Secret of the shopping spree:

All dog equipment is FAR cheaper on wholesale/online than in a store!!!

www.jbpet.com

www.petedge.com

But for collars and advice specific for YOUR puppy, call Kim at 715-627-7863. Ask about the Sierra belt for hands free walking, and leashes to match the collars. These soft slip collars are made for sams with ruffs to preserve the coat. They won't cut or rip it, yet still offer great control. You can also peruse the basic website of equipment at

www.whitepineoutfitters.com

Both Sheree and Kim saw Jade and Onyx as kids and have relatives of the Hawkwind dogs.

Beds: Most sams don't care for dog beds. Too hot. But imitation shearling crate pads and a crate is a great way to start. 400 size crates for girls, 500 for most boys. Wire or plastic? Whatever you wish. The cheapest are dangerous as the metal is so light it can bend, so good quality is important.

I like www.nationalpetcages.com (premium gold) for shows, and plastic petmate cages for home.

Consider a puppygate to close off a room, such as a laundry area or bath or kitchen. Puppies are litterbox trained to plastic litterbox with newspapers. But they prefer to go outside.

Food bowls: They are socialized to anything, but for sanitation we use 2 quart stainless bowls, and for water stainless pails with a clip to the side of the crate.

Grooming basics: Pin brush, slicker brush and a GOOD comb. Recommended for ease of combing is an original greyhound comb.

For blowdryers I recommend a basic K9.

Shampoo go to  www.1stinline.com  or www.kvvet.com for Purepet. D'Grease shampoo is a must for elbows and grimy coat. I use it on legs every time....

Toys: Nylabones (esp. dipped in peanut butter!), and mostly stuffed toys, esp. w/squeakers and sound. They love rope toys as well. Again the online wholesale catalogs are the cheapest. Rawhides only when supervised... and all dogs love balls. WATCH tennis balls as they can be destroyed and pieces can kill a puppy.

(Side note...most dangerous thing in your house is dental floss. DO NOT PUT IT IN A WASTEBASKET. Dogs eat it and it wraps their insides and slices the intestines open and they die....)

Food: Big topic. Raw is what they were raised on and they adore their chicken necks once in a while. NEVER COOKED. Love chicken wings! Go to the yahoo group for Samoyed Barf feeding to learn about natural feeding. Please give them a carrot or fruit once in a while!!!

If you want to feed kibble, check this website for more info, but the kids began on Eagle, graduated to the bison/salmon kibble by Solid Gold called Wolf Cub. My dogs do not do well on the Wolf KING so I recommend going to Millenium. Mixed mostly with cottage cheese, Pedigree beef or mackerel.

Salmon oil, Vit D and Kelp are essential additives.

Favorite treats are Canine Caviar biscotti.

That's basics to start!!

Just another day in puppy paradise. Here is a little show male. They get cuter every day!

January 13, 2005
Socializing involves having lots of people over to play with babies. When they leave with warm  hearts and filled with puppy kisses, this is what is LEFT!

How does one decide which home gets the puppy who steals pillows while one is sleeping??? Naughty! I already named this puppy "Hawkwind's Here Comes Trouble."

January 10, 2005

Tasty tootsies! Yes, they have TEETH now! Just ask Mom!

PUPPIES DUE IN DECEMBER 2004!

On the drawing board ... Jade and/or Onyx have all their clearances. We believe in girls having their first litter fairly early after 2 (with clearances of course) as studies prove it's easier for them. A first litter later seems to have more possibilities for complications.

Besides Jade and Onyx, there are other things to consider in 2005/6. Amethyst has had only one litter when she was 2. She's five now.  Also for consideration would be Indigo's second, and probably final, litter. She will be 5 so we need to think of that soon!

Breeding diary

Puppies due December, 2004
A linebred pedigree for the purist! Amethyst X Ridge  girls are 2 1/2 so we are considering which direction to go!

Here's a shot of Amethyst, hunting as usual!

Contact us for pedigree. Admiring the power of CH Wolf River's Star and CH Moonlighter's Hallmark, we're linebreeding on CH Wolf River's Sand now. Sandy is a Terra daughter.

Pedigree for the dam:

CH Wolf River's Raptor Ridge X CH Seamist's Amethyst of Hawkwind

CH Wolf River's Eagle ROMC
        CH Wolf River's Raptor Ridge

Hawkwind's Amethyst X Ridge 2004
CH Wolf River's Diamond Dust ROMC
        CH Seamist's Amethyst of Hawkwind
            CH Wolf River's Sweet Serenade

This breeding produced beautifully! We took 3 of the 4 from the first breeding to the national and they all got ribbons. Onyx was 2nd in AmBred, Chi was 3rd in AmBred, and Jade was 3rd in BBE. On top of that, Amethyst placed 3rd in Brood Bitch behind two of the top girls in our breed! In 2004 Jade was one of the last 7 in consideration for Best of Breed, so got an Award of Merit. Onyx made the cut, and Siku got 2nd ni Ambred, while Chi placed in weight pull.

Previous Litter Notes...2004

This is the last puppy we placed from the Madonna/Alabaster Carrara breeding, June 2004. This was Madonna's second, and last breeding. He's quite the cutie!

Born June 8, 2004
Hawkwind's Alabaster Carrara X CH Hawkwind's Like A Virgin BISS

Four boys and one girl.  Beautiful pictures to follow... scroll down.

This is Madonna's second litter, so will be the last time we ask her to be a mom. She's doing splendidly. Babies are growing by leaps and bounds. We expect they were a couple days early, as eyes opened on Day 16.

A very quiet and sweet litter, although the little girl is often wandering off on her own. This pedigree is a combination of two of the prettiest Sams we have bred, and a long planned combination of our pedigrees and foundation stock.

Madonna is linebred on older Polar Mist, and this breeding linebreeds on the Wolf River side of Madonna's sire. This next generation of Hawkwind Samoyeds are all more than half Wolf River, with a Terra daughter behind both parents, as well as Terra's brother, Thunder, behind Sera. CH Seamist's Raven of Wolf River back of this pedigree 4 timse, and rather unique to our pedigree program is the concentration of CH Wolf River's Star featured behind these kids 4 times.

This is the Blue Boy at Day 16.

This is the Aqua Boy. Day 16.

Previous Litter Notes...2003

Born October 21, 2003
CH Echo's Just a Dreamer X Can CH Vanderbilt's Rock Anthem

Two boys and four girls to Shale, with Sullie's help, of course!

Shale is a girl of exceptional temperament and beautifully fluid sidegait. Bred to Sullie in August, she has stepped into motherhood again with the grace and ease that is her nature.

This is a repeat breeding which produced beautifully the first time around.

Shale is here in Minnesota, under lease her owners.

There's no doubt this girl has a remarkable history, pedigree, and contribution to make the the breed. Add that to Sullie's pedigree and attributes, and this promises to be a wonderful litter.

This is the sire, CH Echo's Just A Dreamer on his way to a Best in Specialty in Canada.

Let's talk pedigrees.

We believe much of Sullie's power as a studdog comes from his mother's side, Krista, due to her linebred Drumlin/Sparkle pedigree. Among Krista's children is Sullie's sister, the SCA National specialty winner, Puffin: CH Echo's To Die For BIS BISS.

This linebreeding of the Drumlin son, Mach, into a pedigree that highlights Drumlin's littermate, Sparkle, twice, was a perfect compliment to Hawkwind's pedigree program. The question was, which bitch to use? Our interest in the power of that pedigree is due to the wealth of beauty we have from Raven (CH Seamist's Raven of Wolf River) via our Amethyst (CH Seamist's Amethyst of Hawkwind), who was awarded 3rd in the Brood Bitch class of 20 at the 2003 national in California.

Finding a linebred pedigree of Drumlin and his littermates is particularly hard if you're trying to balance out a pedigree program. Hawkwind's focus on Star breedings brought in a lot of Raven via the Birddogs. We were looking for a certain balance. An added plus on the Drumlin littermates is they featured breedings to Vufka, which goes back into the older parts of the Seamist pedigrees. We feel this is a beautiful tapestry of some of the most important dogs in the breed. It also brings together some of the stellar breedings we've researched. Some breedings just seem to click and produce amazing dogs. Terra was one, out of CH Wolf River's Star and CH Wolf River's Prairie. Another is the breeding that produced Mach/Amelia/Boomer, a linebred Drumlin breeding that has been very important to the Samoyed world.

After concentrating on Star for a few breedings, we looked long and hard on how to bring in more Drumlin.

Shale herself has a sire out of a triple Star pedigree. (CH Wolf River's Star) So her pedigree fits our focus very well. In the past few breedings we've concentrated on Star, consolidating as many Terra kids as we could. Shale's dam. CH Wolf River's Vanderbilt Mesa, is also linebred on the Drumlin litter; in this case a Drumlin son (CH Wolf River's Siberian Taiga) to a Drumlin sister's daughter. (The sister is CH Wolf River's Ruffian, and the daughter is CH Wolf River's Fata Morgana, who just won the 2003 Brood Bitch class at the SCA national in California.)

Probably only the purists can follow the pedigree explanation above, but it's an exceptional blending and gives Hawkwind a singular grouping of outstanding pedigree power in our bitches.

There is a special community that focuses upon these stellar pedigrees, and at Hawkwind we're looking at a particular flavor and spice and happily feel we are achieving it!

More background if you're still  interested...

Shale's pedigree shows the remarkable history of some of the top dogs in the breed. She is linebred on the sire's side on CH Wolf River's Falcon. Falcon was famous for a gorgeous front end. Shale's sire, CH Vanderbilt's Krash of Thunder is a half brother half sister on Falcon, the bitches being the Vanderbilt foundation from Shebaska, and the immortal Terra through her daughter, Kite (also sired by Falcon).

The dam side features the daughter of CH Wolf River's Fata Morgana and CH Wolf River's Siberian Taiga. Taiga was renowned as 'the peacemaker,' a dog of exceptional temperament. The dam, Wolf River's Vanderbilt Mesa, is an exceptional linebreeding herself; a Drumlin daughter bred to the son of Drumlin's sister, Ruffian. (If you look up on the sire side of Shale's pedigree you'll find another Drumlin sister; Terra's dam.)

So, for those pedigree buffs, that is a tight linebreeding on Drumlin's litter; basically an intense breeding of Merlyn and Wolf River's foundation bitch with ....

An intense linebreeding of CH Wolf River's Star children via Shale's sire.

Shale is a 7/8 Wolf River pedigree. and an excellent example of a beautifully linebred pedigree that has sparkles of genes going back to the lovely angles and bones of Shebaska.

Evaluating a breeding: One good way to evaluate is to look at the grandparents. That will often give you a good idea of what will happen. All four of Shale's grandparents have great fronts. So we expect great fronts to be evident. Sullie's also known for his ability to throw front ends.

Taiga threw several other qualities, one being a very dominant beautiful rear. He also excelled at CLEAN coming and going.  But his temperament is what I always remember when he's mentioned.

So the reason this movement diva is such a stellar Samoyed is no mystery. Shale also happens to be OFA Excellent. Sullie brings in a lovely combination to the excellent linebreeding Shale possesses.

A repeat breeding never gives the same combination. But the linebred power of this pedigree promises truly great kids. We're excited to see how they grow up!

December 19, 2003

Kids are doing very well! While we have a range of temperaments, we also have some very exciting possibilities running around the back yard. Final evaluations are on going and will be decided in the next few days. I've cornered my search down to two girls, and there is one boy that is exceptional. We're not sure exactly WHO is going to get him though! He's quite the charmer...

We just can't let the pink girl go to a pet home. Attitude plus, and the cutest headpiece! Loves people and is always the first to beg to be picked up. Beautiful front and an almost perfect rear! But it's her charisma that shines. She'd charm some judges out of ribbons in a big way! Here she is (on the left) with the Blue boy.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas! It sure is around here!

Born June 20, 2003 .... Indigo kids .... 2 Girls and 4 Boys

CH Wolf River's Raptor Ridge X CH Hawkwind's Dark Side of the Moon BISS

I have not considered breeding twice to the same dog before. In canvassing the breed I find VERY few stud dogs that offer me the caliber of temperament, genetics, structure, pigment, eye shape, it goes on and on... what more do you want? Those fronts!! I love a great front.

In that pedigree....CH Wolf River's Star is in there twice, the son of CH Moonlighter's Hallmark. It's no secret what dogs I'm linebreeding upon.

Looking a bit closer .... it's a breeding of a Terra great granddaughter to a Terra grandson.

Last night I was watching the Amethyst / Ridge daughters play with their new baby sister, Ginger. At one point Ginger bit the ears of each of them. Not lightly. The most they did was push her away with a paw when she bit too hard. Jade was rolling on her back letting Ginger stand over her and chew on her face. After a stellar performance in the show ring for a yearling, garnering her both majors in 2 days and a Best of Breed over top Samoyeds, she was gently playing with this baby Ginger with such tenderness.

This is what the breed was ... they worked. They played.

A gentle loving aunt, an eager show girl strutting gorgeous sidegait and what to any one's reckoning is a darn near flawless front, gorgeous dark arctic eyes just exactly as the standard outlines. Perfect earset, perfect skull...

I see Jade's sire, but also her mother. How to amplify the incredible beauty of the breeding that produced Madonna & Indigo?

At this time there are 3 dogs in the breed over 10 I've been considering. But THIS one is a known producer. It's in my living room. I see it in that gorgeous sidegait in my yard every day; gentle girls rolling each other on the floor, chasing squirrels, and cuddling up to be loved.

Temperament. The hallmark of a Samoyed. Beauty. Soundness.

I think of what I want for Indigo. And what Ridge needs brought to him. We're not at the 'fixing' things point anymore, although all dogs can be brought closer to the standard. What do we double on to amplify???

So many people look at a stud dog and think of trying to make a copy of him. I find that interesting. Often I see NO puppy that looks like the sire, even in dozens of get.  A good stud dog stamps on certain qualities. But he has to be brought the RIGHT bitch. What does each bring to the table?

Yesterday I stopped by to look at a friend's Raptor Ridge puppies. Quiet, sweet .... 4 weeks old and so totally coordinated. OK. More Ridge kids ...

May 28, 2003

I thought Indigo was pregnant by the wistful look in her eye when I prepared dinner. She's not that food motivated so pleading for more is NOT normal for her. But this morning my 'absolute' proof was there ... a clear mucous discharge. Puppies will be on the solstice weekend....

PUPPIES ARE HERE! At midnight she had a boy, then a few minutes later a girl! A break, then another deuce just like that again! Then it slowed down and by morning we have 2 girls and 4 boys.

June 30, 2003

Kids are growing fast! Indigo still goes out to dig thinking she can move her little family outside and out of the bedroom....Sorry. Today we're doing nail trimming again. Red boy thinks it is a great injustice. Plus the regular cuddling. These kids are up on their legs trucking all over the whelping box.

The babes got their first taste of yogurt yesterday. The jury was out on whether that was a good thing, as I saw some wrinkled up noses. They seem to still prefer mom's milk.

Eyes started opening yesterday so the room is darker as they get used to light. 10 days there are so many magical changes! Their world is changing. We do lots of handling so they get the idea that humans are wonderful and safe. Deep trust and bonds between humans and dogs are built upon good experiences. And who can resist cuddling little ones?

July 1, 2003
Today as I awakened the babies were chortling about whatever babies chortle about. They are moving around the whelping box with determination, up on their legs practicing reach and drive. I just sat with them for ages, cuddling, cooing and generally just enjoying life.

First out of the whelping box is ..... Rose girl!

Red boy discovered his foot today.

Pigment is good on the babies, with some noses colored at birth. The breeding was a couple days apart, so puppies can be a couple days younger or older than each other. Last eyes to open are Black boy's.

Later when the day warms up we're going outside again. The reason for this is the more surfaces, smells, and different things that happen to them create this feeling that the world is safe. Things happen, but it is all OK. So when they go to their homes and encounter all their new life has to offer, their general disposition will be curious and confident. They know startling things happen, but it always comes out OK. Today it'll be fresh cut grass. Soon the neighbor's Bengal kitten. But not until they are a bit BIGGER than the kitten!

July 4, 2003

More different surfaces ... today the kitchen. Being in the center of things means they hear more of 'regular life' noises. Too bad they are not a little older to appreciate the fireworks. As it started I gave them tastes of yogurt/milk so they could practice licking. The desire is positive associations so there's never any anxiety over storms and loud sounds. BUT they are a little too young for that.

They are walking on all fours, albeit a little shakily.

I love this age! Very cute! They ARE able to potty on their own and too young for the litterbox, but soon. It's lotsa-laundry time! They do look back at people with a sort of unfocused gaze. They are very aware of the world, but sleep a LOT.

Madonna is helping out, just as Indigo helped her with her litter. The two of them are in the kitchen, but not letting other dogs in there.

Today it's hot again. The puppies like COOL. Yesterday in the late afternoon the west bedroom got too warm, even though the A/C was 76. So the puppies cried. I took them and put them on a cool tile floor and IMMEDIATELY they fell asleep!

July 10, 2003

We're moving onto other food. Mommie Indy is doing wonderfully with milk production, but it's time to offer a bit of variety. We've had mostly similar things so far; goats milk, fresh Cedar Summit yogurt ... The last couple days I've tossed chicken wings in, but they are mostly being 'gummed' by the very beginning teeth, before being scarfed up by Mom.

Tonight liver juice. LOVED IT! Absolutely got top scores by everyone! Dessert was yogurt, milk and egg yolk. Still learning to lap up and drink, this was definitely a messy affair. Winning the contest for wearing the MOST food at the end: BLUE BOY! Legs, forechest, ears, head ... The most charming part is watching them figure out they can get just as much by eating each other's faces!

All the puppies are totally crashed now. They had a third trip to work tonight and cuddling by a dozen students. A long and satisfying day!

July 20, 2003

Individuality is really starting to show up now at 4 weeks. Teal wanted down ASAP and the picture process was just not her cup of tea. This is the little red boy. Here he is again crooning a little puppy howl. Very animated little guy.

Rose girl is usually romping and jumping for joy, but we caught her in a quieter moment. Actually just woke her up....You get these pictures however you can!

Teal girl in a quieter moment...

August 2, 2003

Growing fast! Here is Blue or Red (they look alike), who truly believes that big bucket of chicken is for him! It was hilarious how many times the boys tried to jump into the bucket!

Red boy got the award for 'first to try the stairs' today!

A picture of the two biscuit kids is on the NEWS page.

Previous Litter Notes...2002

Born December 4, 2002

                                        Bailey X Madonna

      CH Chatanika's Bailey's Creme, X Am/Can CH Hawkwind's Like a Virgin

Madonna whelps a litter of nine! Five girls and four boys.

                                Here's daddy working...

Bailey is on the camera side right in front of the sled.

                            Here's Mommie working ....

And here are the babies working ... well, growing is hard work!

Recipe for a great Samoyed:

Take a working sled dog from the top mid distance Samoyed team in the Midwest, whose grandfather is the top owner handled specialty winner of all time (12 specialties), and with a grandmother who won the national and is an owner handled BIS bitch, and with a pedigree that is 3/4 of generations of top sled Samoyeds.  (Bailey can be seen on the Chatanika website: chatanika.com)

Add the 2000 Best Futurity Puppy / 2001 National SCA Best of Winners and National Best Bred-By, whose grandfather and great-grandfather and great-grandmother are all Best in Show dogs (OK, OK, Terra won the National, too...and is in Bailey's pedigree as mentioned above), and whose mother and maternal grandfather are specialty winners (oh, and so is her sister 4 times over)...

Add power, structure and working ability linebred in by Wolf River. Continued to be tested on the trail by Chatanika.

Pedigree expertise by Chatanika and Hawkwind.

Madonna's breathtaking beauty.

Add a rendezvous at Wolf River in Wisconsin.

And we have some beauties here at Hawkwind for Christmas 2002.

Additional flavors in this recipe:

Strength of structure: I was deliberately looking for a strong dog for reach and shoulders. He is the wheel dog (right in front of the sled) on this side of the above picture. I wanted a pedigree strong for good fronts.

Strength of character: My other major consideration is, as always, temperament. I was vacillating between several dogs in the Chatanika kennel, although I loved Bailey's intelligence which is clearly visible when you meet him. He is a likeable guy, easygoing, and a good working dog. I asked Farrel to describe the difference in his dogs as they run on the team, and his comments about Bailey's incredible stability even as a young dog led made me think this was the one for Madonna. I dearly love that harmonious 'let's get the work done' and no nonsense attitude. And when it's time to play, it's time to play!

Aside from the obvious intelligence, he is solidly stable, strong and dependable. I remember seeing him at Chicago Intl, flying around the ring, stronger and faster and more correct in sidegait than any other dog there. Perfect suspension! My opinion, obviously. But also the breeder judge's (Shirley Mangini) that day, who awarded him the Major. He finished with a third major under one of the most respected judges in our breed, Mardee Ward-Fanning.

Kim & Farrel at Chatanika have so many beautiful dogs. At a recent show I introduced Madonna to some, just to verify my feelings. Don't you think the dogs know best? She liked Bailey by far, going into a play bow, and inviting him into games. I think some of the dogs thought she was a little too forward, and NOT a hard to get kind of gal, but Bailey engaged her in a romp right away. They obviously got along just fine.

I just can't say enough about this boy. The intelligence in his face, the humor, his ability to play with other intact males, etc. This IS what the breed was going back to the original imports. He's one of those dogs that when I saw him, I KNEW I wanted him in my pedigrees.

From purely a pedigree perspective, this is another breeding into a Terra grandson. BIS/BISS CH Wolf River's Terra is a name one whispers. It's often said with the word 'immortal.'

Great fronts are deeply bred in this pedigree. CH Wolf River's Star is in there 5 times. Generations of dogs who ran and lived together in harmony...

Madonna's OFA rating came back in September, and with delight, we announce she is an Excellent. She finished her AKC championship with ANOTHER 5 point major at Chicagoland. She went out to play for a few weekends in July, racking up several Best of Breeds. Then she blew her coat, but managed to garner a BOS at GMSF over top ranked BIS/BISS competition, before retiring to think about puppies.

The breeding that produced Madonna was a decision to linebreed on the older Polar Mist in her pedigree. I found an exceptional male that was an outcross of a phenomenal and nicely linebred Wolf River bitch (Kite), to a linebred Polar Mist boy. That magic breeding was done by the Elford's at Vanderbilt.

So this breeding is to linebreed on the Wolf River quarter of Madonna's pedigree. It's one more step in a larger program I developed. The outlines were clear in my mind a few years ago, and include the expansion of bloodlines for gene depth but retaining the quality of those genes, at the same time as building on the strengths of the carefully selected bloodlines we choose to use.

But one must take it out of theory!

Other Hawkwind breedings are all set up to work together over time, so it's easy to see what we're doing; building power in structure, temperament, genetic strength, .... oh, not to forget the overall beauty of the Samoyed as these exceptional genes come down to us from the gifted breeders of the past.

December 17, 2002

Last night the babies began to open their eyes! First three were the 3 smallest: Green boy, Yellow girl and White girl.

Today they're at that magical time! They are aware of the world and each other. Eyes don't necessarily SEE anything yet, except shadows. But from crawling over lumps and finding 'mom' smells for food, they now are putting feet in their mouths, pawing at each other, and up and walking around with far more determination. The door to the whelping box is about 6 inches up and a couple have crawled out already. Hey! The world is not ready for you guys yet!

Personalities are continuing to develop. Maroon girl is quiet and cuddly, as is pink girl. They remind me of Madonna as a baby. Red girl eats the most, talks the most, and definitely thinks she is the center of everything. Black boy has one of those faces that just makes you want to fast forward and see how he is going to look someday! Green boy is the great go getter and one would think he'd be the first out of the box, but it was BLUE! Blue talked even more than usual in the middle of the floor, chortling some nonsense. I'd love to know what he was thinking. The blue horizon? Purple boy and black boy are the quieter of the boys.

This is a quiet and easy litter in most ways. But they almost 'sing' sometimes. And more than their fair share of cooing! It's very lyrical. They rarely cry. But Madonna is an excellent mother and they are clean and fed and pottied leaving me nothing to do at this point but admire a beautiful litter and an adoring mother!

But there sure are a LOT of them!

December 25, 2002

Three weeks old. We're supplementing their food to make it easier on the mom. This is such a cute stage! The little ones eat the food off each other faces, making a general mess all around! Personalities are developing more, and they definitely 'look' back at you now. Up and walking around fairly well now, it's almost time to move to their own room. Not quite yet!

There are major changes in the dynamics of the pack now. Indigo is very close to her sister, Madonna. When the babies were really young we pretty much seclude them. Even though everyone slept in the bedroom as they always do, at the very first we crate everyone but the mom and kids at night. It's a natural instinct to be very protective, and we want as little stress as possible for the new mom who has so many duties to tend to ...

But this arrangement was stressful for Indigo for different reasons. She and Madonna have been raised together and this was the first time they were even moderately separated. Madonna was obviously more interested in her babies. So Indigo played with the other girls, but I could see the confusion on her face.

Now Indigo is in the whelping box helping out! She is TOTALLY delighted with this arrangement, and it's easy to see the pride on her face. Madonna feeds the babies, and Indigo just adores being in there cleaning bottoms and nuzzling them. It's easy to see that this is how real pack dynamics work! Indy actually spent the night in the whelping box, giving Madonna much needed rest. At 3 weeks, this is a time of maximum stress on the mother. The sheer amount of food she needs to produce milk for 9 rapidly growing kids is enormous. She gets the best of everything all the time. Her favorite thing: Bear Creek Chicken Soup. So that goes on lots of things; ground chicken, AFS meat, anything and everything!

It's a very merry Christmas here at Hawkwind!

For pedigree buffs, there is a headshot of Bruin, CH White Satin's Kodiak Kub, on http://chatanika.com/kodiakkhristmas.htm. Bailey is linebred on this beautiful boy.

More Previous Litter Notes...2002

Raptor Ridge X Amethyst breeding ....

On April 7, 2002, Amethyst had 4 puppies. Two boys and 2 girls. All close to a pound at birth. VERY strong and exceptionally healthy babies! While she ran a bit of a temperature for a couple days (not unusual and is FINE now), I have to say I have never seen such an easy litter. I'm used to being up all night for days watching, and making sure the all eat by charting their colors and times they eat.

Not needed for these kids! They were up on their hind legs on Day ONE to get to Mom, and eating with gusto, all four little tails up in the air and wagging back and forth happily.

Amethyst has taken to motherhood with the grace with which she does all things. Puppies are clean, fed and exceptionally content. Often all I hear are the small murmurings of contentment from the whelping box beside my bed.

If only all breedings were like this!

9 days old, April 16, 2002.

Puppies should be double their birth weight by now. They are all over 2 1/2 lbs. Strong, quiet, and moving around easily. Such strong muscles. A textbook litter. Absolutely perfect.

Nail clipping was yesterday. Green boy didn't think it was the most fun he ever had. So he squirmed a little. Red girl settled in and let me, as did Purple girl with a little more protest. I just picked up Blue boy's toes and he never even woke up. Blue boy and Red girl fall asleep in my arms in a moment. I take copious notes on temperament differences as it's so interesting to see how it plays out later. For now most of what happens is lots of cuddling time for each. We begin to build the bond of humans and human smells meaning peace and safety and contentment.

Today I think we'll do some pictures! Amethyst is spending more time playing with the other adults. You'd never know she had puppies last week by her antics in the yard. I do catch her looking under the juniper and an old doghouse to see if there's somewhere outside to stash the babies. I don't think so, little girl! They are safe and happy in my bedroom for now.

She's trying to catch rodents, poking her nose under various boulders in the garden. I do hope she doesn't think I'm going to let her bring them in the house if she does catch one! The kids aren't ready for weaning yet anyway.

April 26, 2002

This is just the happiest litter! Up and around, chirping and cooing. Red got out of the whelping box and THEN made some noise. Weights today are Purple girl 3 7/8 lbs.; Red girl 4 lbs.; Green boy 4 lbs.; Blue boy 4 1/4 lbs. All are getting used to the dremel for getting their toenails done with less protest now. Well, blue never protested! He sleeps through it!

They look with interest into faces, both of humans and each other now. Ears are open. Today they get rock music to replace the quiet tones of classical. It's a magical time now that they are all aware of each other. Blue boy got up to potty by himself, so we'll be moving into larger quarters soon with separate potty areas.

May 21, 2002

Red girl is the first one to go up the stairs on her own. With cheering and encouragement. Purple is one step behind her, with both boys bringing up the rear.

Purple attacks the dreaded tulip army ... Red is the only one to get on the couch by herself yet.

We're learning to ride in cars, punctuated by trips to Dairy Queen to make it fun. A half dozen neighborhood kids drop by almost daily for fun and games.

Green has a new game of plucking the flowers off the pansy plants. Naughty!

Purple attacks the dreaded tulip army ...

June 2002

Puppies growing up ... Mom Amethyst shows them how to hunt, accompanied by Aunt Indigo.

Spring is in full bloom.

Green boy (who will be named Hawkwind's Dreams of Malachite) is the life of the party! Everyone needs a puppy like this. Always the first to signify his indignation at anything. Made more noise than any of the puppies, and from the very start. A go getter with great food drive, he'll do anything for a piece of cheese. Very fond of applesauce. Often comes around a corner and eyes me with a big grin. Life is his oyster. He'll learn agility and the show ring antics, but my guess at his own design to some degree. I'm afraid he'll tug on the judges pantleg and try to get him or her to join the party!

Blue boy is going to be a special friend to Madonna and Indigo's littermate,  Mika. He is the sweet charmer of the bunch. Ice white coat and those long bones courtesy of Drumlin and Diamond Dust, this boy is quite the mover.

Lotsa sidegait is his nickname. Often is the first one to come when called. He quite thinks life is good and sometimes I think he'd do well in politics before I remember he is just a puppy. Not much of a trouble maker. He thinks the greatest game is chasing the dryer hose so getting him dry after a bath is an event. I guess Amethyst just taught him hunting ANYTHING can be fun.

Red girl is the sweetheart. Sweet face, sweet temperament, and most likely to crawl in your lap and settle in. Very much thinks people are a lovely way to spend time. But she can give it to the boys when it's needed! A very eager to please little girl. Mayhaps the best front of the crew, we are still deciding which palace in the world would be best for this jewel. I tend to nickname her Jade. Precious and treasured. Jade is the concentrated essence of love.  In a fur coat!

Purple girl is on co ownership with us here at Hawkwind. Swift, and sure timing in a lovely ground covering sidegait. Too much pizzazz for her own good! The troublemaker of the bunch. Carpets are for shredding, no? This girl WILL have proper leg length and sammie proportions, accompanied by her stunning arctic eyes with a proper slant to the correct ear set. Top it off with a dazzling sammie smile!

Raptor Ridge X Amethyst

CH Wolf River's Raptor Ridge  X CH Seamist's Amethyst of Hawkwind

Some say once you'd had a Wolf River dog you will never settle for anything else.

First, there's temperament, temperament, temperament. These will be sweet kids.

I saw Ridge at the Christmas cluster shows over a year ago. I'd seen him before, but this time I really watched him. Such solid movement. Gliding over the ground in a manner that brings to mind that old cliche ... as if you could put a glass of water on his back and he'd never spill a drop.

This is a very masculine dog. Strong. A dog you know would get you home if you were out sledding and got caught 25 miles out in a snowstorm.

Ridge was standing motionless waiting to be groomed. I looked at him and he considered me with an intelligence that was impossible to deny. Some dogs beg for treats, or are overcome with themselves. This dog is simply noble and very self possessed. Impressive.

But it's when he moves you have to stand back and just admire him. Like art in motion.

He seems to elicit 'trust.' Strange words or qualities to explain ...

The intricacies of this pedigree take a little closer look. The immortal Terra (CH Wolf River's Terra BIS BISS) had a brother. Thunder just happens to be the sire of Amethyst's mother, Sera. I saw Sera win Veteran Sweeps at the 2000 national. It was one of those performances that gives you shivers. So this is a linebreeding into one of the strongest bitches I think ever walked on the earth. Terra.  Amethyst's father, a national Best of Winners and currently one of the strongest stud dogs in the breed, lends a beauty and perfection of head type superseded only by his presence in a ring. Ch Wolf River's Diamond Dust is one of sweetest Samoyeds for temperament that I have ever known. The big question: Does he throw that gorgeous temperament. Yes!

Wolf River structure is a given in this pedigree.

That means these dogs will be athletes. Timing, beauty in motion, and the kind of muscle tone that responds to work.  Hip strength should is wonderful, with an array of Excellents close up in the pedigree. When I had Amethyst's hips xrayed, the vet told me to go home and have champagne for these were the best hips in my house.

Amethyst's breeding is a half-brother/half-sister on CH Seamist's Raven of Wolf River, the legendary dam of the Bird dogs. Raven may not have been recreated on earth, but her heart lives on in these pedigrees. A special thank you to Anne & Archie Peil for letting this girl grace the corner of my bed every night. *

Ridge's granddam is the immortal Terra as well. Bred to CH Wolf River's Drumlin, one of the all time top stud dogs of the breed, produced one of the precious few Terra daughters which in this case is CH Wolf River's Sand. Drumlin was known for many things, but I see his sweet temperament in his kids and grandkids. It's something very special.

Specialties are events where Sammies are showcased. They are a one breed dog show just for our delight. Winning any ribbon at one is wonderful, and winning the coveted Best in Specialty Show means the dog was considered the very best Sammie there. With that comes the honor of using the title BISS after the name in all pedigrees.

Only 2 dogs in Samoyed history have won more than 10 Specialties. They are CH Winterfrost's Gyrfalcon BISS and CH Sno N Sho's Clr N Present Danger BIS BISS. BOTH are Eagle sons. So is Raptor Ridge, but he's the only one of this elite group that came from a Terra daughter.

There's more, but we could go on forever regarding the legends in this pedigree. CH Wolf River's Star, featured 3 times, was only 10 generations out of the original arctic expedition dogs. That means this is a VERY old pedigree. Whereas many Sammies are now 40+ generations from the original dogs, the Raptor Ridge/Amethyst kids can claim that 13 generations back their ancestors helped the arctic mushers.

This promises to be a very special litter.

*Sidelight: I was doing research into old Seamist pedigrees a while ago, particularly Raven's brother, CH Seamist's Spellbinder. I was looking for old videotape of dogs. Someone said, "Why don't you just call the Peils. They will have Binder if anyone does."

So I did. I also told them of my dream of blending in the old Seamist into my breeding program. Archie got quiet. Then he told me three days before, on a lunar eclipse, these little Raven grandchildren were born. In this breeding they were trying to get back to Raven.

With more reservations than puppies (no surprise), I was somehow lucky enough to get one of these precious babies. Lunar eclipses are special for me. But not as special as being able to cuddle on the couch with Amethyst! She comes with me everywhere, and charms all my students in classes. She thinks they are there just for to see her, and her delight is contagious!

Being a perfectly behaved little Seamist girl, this breeding to another Wolf River dog of legendary pedigree promises to make sure my bed is warm with sweet Sammie kids forever!
