In the News...2003
December 25. 2003
Lovely day for puppy play! Four puppies here, but Magenta goes to his new
home tomorrow. We're still unable to let Pink Girl go. She is such a treat!
Merry Christmas to all!
December 19, 2003
Puppy evaluations going on! More pics on the nursery page under current
litter...
This is one of the girls. Oodles of coat and having a wonderful puppyhood!

December 6-7, 2003
Winding down the year, we go to St. Cloud, an easy 90 minute drive. Indigo
is just barely coming into coat, and easily goes Best of Breed. Newer judge so
we hadn't given him any class entries. On Sunday, Sonny Ambrosio finds Jade for
her 4th major, and Best of Winners. He said he considered her for breed, but
gave that to Indigo, who went on to Group 4! Nice weekend!
November 28-29, 2003
Back in the ring for fun! Shows close to home, yeah! Madonna goes Best
Opposite on Saturday, and Best of Breed on Sunday.
October 22-25, 2003
THE NATIONAL! What a trek! Escaping the wildfires in
Southern CA Sunday morning via the only route out we could find (10 towards
Phoenix) was only one of the trials of this trip! We'll spare you the lowlights
and on to the highlights!
Hawkwind's Dreams of Malachite (Chi) owned by Jennifer Sullivan from Columbia, Missouri, was 3rd in Ambred under Denny Kodner.
Hawkwind's Dance On Air (Ginger) was 3rd in the 9-12 class under John Studebaker, who judges all the bitch classes on Thursday.
Hawkwind's Justify My Love (Isis) owned by Vanessa Garcia of Utah made the cut and was '5th.' She garnered many favorable comments from breed purists ringside! Legs, proportions, a gorgeous front and rear, and OHHH, a neck arch that is breath-taking ... These young kids will take time to grow into what they will be, but the promise is definitely there!
Next the tough Bred By class. 28 of the top bitches from around the country. Won by Lynette Blue with Polar Mist's Lil Country Girl who went on to Best Bred By and Best of Winners! Congratulations, Lynette! 2nd was Kay Hallberg's Wolf River's Moonrise, a truly GORGEOUS bitch! Hawkwind's Emerald Jade was 3rd in BBE! This was ONE tough class!
American Bred was next. Onyx was being naughty. Frankly I saw lots of strange behavior. Privately I said to someone perhaps an earthquake was coming. Later we learned of the fires building. Not that it was any excuse! Onyx is the party girl of our kennel! And she had fun! Hawkwind's Palomino Onyx ended up 2nd in Ambred! Yeah!
Later in the day: Brood Bitch. Class of 20, including some of the top bitches in the breed. Won by CH Wolf River's Fata Morgana, 2nd to Lynette's girl, our own Amethyst (CH Seamist's Amethyst of Hawkwind) won 3rd in Brood Bitch! We were thrilled!
Congratulations to Amethyst's mother, CH Wolf River's Sweet Seranade, who won her Veteran class and went on to Best Veteran of the national and an Award of Merit! Also congratulations to Amethyst's father, CH Wolf River's Diamond Dust who won the Stud dog class, as well as Top Stud Dog Award for 2002.
Speaking of which, we're proud to announce Top Brood Bitch award for 2002 goes to .... CH Charisma-Omni Front Page News BISS. We're speechless on this one! What an honor!
Her daughter, CH Hawkwind's Dark Side of the Moon BISS was the SCA's 2nd Top Winning Bitch for 2002.
Topping it all off was an Award of Merit to CH Hawkwind's Like A Virgin BISS. What a stunning national!
October 14, 2003
Shale whelps 4 girls and 2 boys. See the current litters page for more info on
them! Talkative bunch of kids!
September 21, 2003
3 days of shows at the gorgeous Purina Farms show site! We brought out Chi (Hawkwind's
Dreams of Malachite) for some ringtime, and Madonna in Breed. Chi got his first
point on Friday, went RWD to the major on Sat., and his first major on Sunday!
Good boy! Madonna was Best of Breed all 3 days. The kids enjoyed being set up
next to the pony and donkey corral!
August 2, 2003
Home this weekend to celebrate puppy's 6 week birthday. What a lovely summer!
Can you say T-I-R-E-D?
Still awake is Purple boy. Behind him is Teal girl. These two are the biscuit kids.
More pictures on the nursery page ... Thanks to the Connors for the 6 week pics!
July 27, 2003
Madonna is Best of Breed over a large field of specials, BIS bitches and
dogs, including 4 BISS winners. In current national rankings (Canine Chronicle)
she is #15 All Breed and the #14 Samoyed. She is the 4th top Samoyed bitch in
the nation as of July 1.
July 25, 2003
Madonna gets the bitch AOM at GMSF.
July 12, 2003
Madonna is Best of Breed at Kishwaukee Kennel Club over BIS/BISS
specials.
July 2, 2003
Isis gets her CGC today! Congrats to her and Vanessa Garcia in Utah! Isis is
Hawkwind's Justify My Love, a Madonna daughter.
June 21, 2003 LITTER UPDATES ARE AT THE Nursery
June 20, 2003
Indigo goes into labor at midnight. One boy, and one girl minutes later. Then a
break and once again, a boy and a girl together! By morning we have 4 boys and 2
girls!
June 15, 2003
One of my mentors told me to give this judge a big entry as he has rewarded
structure. Never showed to him before, but gave him 4 of my girls. Only day
Amethyst was entered, as she needs only ONE point to finish her Championship!
She did it! WB for a THIRD major! Amethyst is a CHAMPION! These girls LOVE big grass rings to stretch out in! Her daughter, Onyx gets another RWB! Her day is coming.
Get home to find out Amethyst's sister finished her championship on the same day! Congratulations to breeders Ann & Archie Peil on such lovely girls!
June 14, 2003
A BIG day for Hawkwind! We entered 3 girls and got 3 BIG ribbons!
First, Hawkwind's Dance On Air. Ginger went Best of Opposite in Sweeps to start a great day! Thank you to breeder judge Kathy Bube!
Then, leggy yearling Onyx (Hawkwind's Palomino Onyx) goes RWB to a 5 point major. Wow. Specialty judge is none other than the top breeder in Samoyeds: Lynette Hansen Blue from Polar Mist. What an honor!
Specials. A whole ring of gleaming champions shining in the sun. I have to confess I did the Madonna/Bailey breeding when I did so she'd be in coat for this day. Then I took her out and trained her in the ring in May, for she never really has been shown that much. She is learning fast, and in one month is in the top 20 breed and all breed.
So the little girl who was Best Futurity Puppy in 2000, Best of Winners at the 2001 nationals, has now a BISS behind her name!!! Madonna wins Best in Specialty Show ... all under TOP breeder judges! Thank you, Lynette!
This was a special 20th Anniversary of the Chicagoland club and the trophies! Gorgeous hand painted glass imported from Czecheslovakia with Sammies on them! It was just a WONDERFUL day! Preview pics are up at http://www.chicagosamoyedclub.org This is special for Hawkwind as Madonna finished her Championship at this very same show in 2002.
June 7 & 8, 2003
Madonna is Best of Breed at the local shows. Warmups for NEXT weekend!
May 30, 2003
Madonna is Best of Breed in Fargo.
May 28, 2003
This morning Indigo has the clear mucous discharge that signals she is
DEFINITELY pregnant! Puppies due June 20.
May 25, 2003
Mika was the only qualifier out of 20 dogs in JWW Excellent today at BOTC! With
a perfect score of 100 and 3 seconds under time, she garnered one of her more
favorite highlights of her working career: A stop for ice cream on the way home!
May 24, 2003
Puppy match in St. Peter this weekend. Entry over 85. Best in Match and Best
Puppy in Match was:
Hawkwind's Dance on Air. Ginger does it again! This time against the adult dogs as well.
Mika, Hawkwind's New Moon Rising, got her Open Standard title with a 2nd place finish at BOTC Agility Trial!
In her first run in Excellent JWW she placed 3rd!
May 18, 2003
Imagine a specialty weekend with time to do it all! See agility in the morning,
watch puppy sweeps, see obedience, and groom and chat. Then breed starts at
1:30. Relaxing! Add beautiful weather, grooming outside under a tree...lovely
specialty this weekend in MN. Madonna is starting to get the hang of showing I
think. CH Hawkwind's Like A Virgin gets her 2nd Specialty BOS under Judge Douglas Shipley on Sunday.
May 11, 2003
Iffy weekend weatherwise (5 inches of rain Sat. night), but Amethyst picked up
her 2nd major and BOW defeating 14 bitches, and sits at 14 points. I have always
heard stories of those 'last point' blues. So on Sunday she, dutifully, got RWB!
Oh, well!
More news: Over 60 puppies competed in the Cambridge puppy match. Guess who won??? Best in Match is Hawkwind's Dance On Air, little Ginger! The best judge was a toy person and I had to sit with a straight face while he told me how 'cute' she was and that she never quit showing. Is that what toy people look for? Heavens! No mention of her layback of shoulder, sidegait or anything about working!!! Working Group. Working dog!! Cute? Yeah, I guess so. But she's a sammie puppy and ALL of them are CUTE!!! Ginger did seem to have a very good time!
May 2, 2003
After a weekend off, we traveled to Madison for a 3 day cluster. Jade was
entered, but I decided not to show her at all this weekend. Mostly majors.
Madonna has never really been specialed. She is 'almost' in coat, so while we were pushing it, we thought we'd take her out to play!
Madonna's record for the weekend:
Friday Best of Breed
Saturday Best of Breed and a Group 2
Sunday Best of Breed
Not bad, little girl!
That makes 8 big wins in the last 8 shows we entered.
April 19, 2003
LONG drive. 2400 miles round trip. Breeding accomplished so puppies due June
20-21. See Nursery section for that as it unfolds. 3am moonlight tie in the
puppy yard at Wolf River. VERY romantic stuff...
For those of you who really wonder if all that temperament stuff is true ... I was on a morning walk from the woods at Wolf River and on my return trotted my very HOT in season girls up to the fence where over a dozen Chatanika and Wolf River dogs were in a large play yard. I'm not sure who exactly was all in there, but it was boys AND girls. ALL loose. Rough guess was half a dozen intact males. Sure they were interested. But fights? Nada. They simply resumed playing when we walked away.
But the real news. PVSC. Probably THE most respected judge in the breed. Mardee Ward-Fanning. Why ELSE make a trip like that? One day show. Everyone brings out their best for Mardee. Would she like the girls? Onyx won her 12-18 class full of mud. Dreadful show weather. Mud everywhere. Jade takes BBE. Yikes. BOTH girls in Winners. But Jade is very attached and Onyx shows for everyone! I kept trying to hand dogs off and people out there were SO nice. Still, showing THESE girls is different than most dogs. You have to let THEM do it. And they fly. ANY pressure on the lead and they won't move out like they can. Done right it's like running with an empty leash. Or a rose petal on the end.
Jade takes the 5 point major. Wow. That is 3 shows in a row and 3 majors. First birthday just 12 days ago.
But it was a great club and such wonderful hospitality! Old Dominion is so steeped in tradition. But MUDDY!!! They put us in a field hundreds of yards from the show site. I told them I'd driven 1200 miles and with my friend we had 7 dogs in my van. Someone wonderful named Jane came and helped us move the dogs in golf carts over the mud. Took forever. Total grooming time was LESS than 15 minutes. (Yeah! It looked like it!)
A 5 point major under Mardee is something to cherish. Not much for pics of her really. Here she is as a baby a few months old. Maybe she likes mud!

April 12 & 13, 2003
Back in the show ring after a pretty long break! Jade was the only girl shown.
She went BBE/WB/BOW/BOS over a bitch special who has a Best in Show! Wow. Her
first major to match her sister's!
Next day another judge we don't know. Jade got BBE, and then WB. Now to try to make a major one of two ways; go BOW to crossover the dog major, or go up over the specials bitch to make the major in bitches. We go up, back and around and the judge comes over and says Best of BREED! OH! Forgot you can do it THAT way as well! So Jade beat a BIS bitch, a BISS winner and a current top 20 dog.
Guess it was a good weekend! Topped off by a puppy party! Some of Ginger's littermates got to play! And PLAY they did!!! Some tired puppies!
Indigo is in season so we're heading for a breeding this next week! See the nursery pages under Current litter...

April 7, 2003
Busy month of March with puppies growing up! The one we kept: Hawkwind's Dance
On Air named after a song by Madonna; Vogue.
"Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers dance on air." We call her Ginger!
She joins her sisters in MN: Garbo and Monroe. And their Utah sister named Hawkwind's Justify My Love.
Jade and Onyx celebrate their first birthdays today!
February 22, 2003
Went to Chicago for ONE day of the International. Results: Hawkwind's Emerald
Jade goes Best in Sweepstakes! And her sister, Hawkwind's Palomino Onyx takes
the 4 point major! We love specialties and the club made it so much fun! These
girls are only 10 months old. Specialty judge was Denny Kodner.
February 8, 2003
Peace and quiet. Most of the puppies have gone to their homes and we're
getting those glowing reports on how well they are doing.
Still deciding on which of the two show girls is staying here at Hawkwind permanently.
February 2, 2003
Indigo (CH Hawkwind's Dark Side of the Moon BISS) goes Best in Specialty Show
for her FOURTH time at SAMI in Fond du Lac! Judge was Katie Gammill.

January 27, 2003
Puppies get their first real bath! Mixed reviews on this ....
Did a digital of movement today. They all did well as there was food involved in this! Copies going to show homes soon! Evaluation next weekend in Wisconsin!
January 25, 2003
Shale takes a 4 point major at Grayslake, WI. Onyx wins her puppy class of 5.
Jade wins the class the next day (Onyx wasn't entered that day, and neither was
Shale.) This was just the warmup for the specialties next weekend. Puppies are 7
1/2 weeks old now.
December 8, 2002
Indigo takes a nice Best of Breed in St. Cloud on Saturday to wrap up the
year. For Sunday's judge we thought we'd try Shale, who went WB over some very
nice competition.
Puppies are 4 days old. Very strong. Rather quiet litter overall. So far .... Madonna is recovering very well and being her own sweet, cuddly self. Or is it the ice cream she gets when she does that?
More litter notes will go under Nursery: Current Litters.
December 5, 2002
Puppies are here! 5 girls and 4 boys! Everyone is doing great! Madonna is
bright eyed and obviously enjoying herself. It's so satisfying to see that look
of pride and love on her face! She being a perfect mom as I knew she would!
Congratulations to Bailey and Madonna on such a beautiful litter!
December 4, 2002
Xrayed yesterday and it's a larger litter than we expected. We see 8
skeletons easily and MAYBE a 9th all the way by her spine. No wonder she is so big! Those babies are really moving as well! Poor Madonna. She yelped once
and you can tell those puppies are kicking. Sometimes you can actually SEE it
from watching her belly. I called the stud owners and asked if sled dogs usually
try to to begin running before they are born ....
On one hand I'm delighted with such a large litter. I had to ask some lovely homes to wait last time because we did not have enough babies. THIS time we can surely get lovely babies into the these great homes who have waited so long! If they all make it, we actually will have more puppies than reservations! So those of you who have waited more than a year, this is very good news!
On the other hand ... a large litter is much more taxing on the bitch. Madonna is a girl who will do anything I ask as much as she can. She's resting now for the big day, which could be ANYTIME now. The puppies are fully calcified. (For those who don't know what that means; the xray shows the level of development of the skeletal structure. These are ready to be born.)
I'll post up here as soon as there is news ...
