In the News...2002

December 8, 2002
Indigo takes a nice Best of Breed in St. Cloud on Saturday to wrap up the year. For Sunday's judge we thought we'd try Shale, who went WB over some very nice competition.

Puppies are 4 days old. Very strong. Rather quiet litter overall. So far .... Madonna is recovering very well and being her own sweet, cuddly self. Or is it the ice cream she gets when she does that?

More litter notes will go under Nursery: Current Litters.

Puppies are here! 5 girls and 4 boys! Everyone is doing great! Madonna is bright eyed and obviously enjoying herself. It's so satisfying to see that look of pride and love on her face! She being a perfect mom as I knew she would! Congratulations to Bailey and Madonna on such a beautiful litter!

X-rayed yesterday and it's a larger litter than we expected. We see 8 skeletons easily and MAYBE a 9th all the way by her spine. No wonder she is so big! Those babies are really moving as well! Poor Madonna. She yelped once and you can tell those puppies are kicking. Sometimes you can actually SEE it from watching her belly. I called the stud owners and asked if sled dogs usually try to to begin running before they are born ....

On one hand I'm delighted with such a large litter. I had to ask some lovely homes to wait last time because we did not have enough babies. THIS time we can surely get lovely babies into the these great homes who have waited so long! If they all make it, we actually will have more puppies than reservations! So those of you who have waited more than a year, this is very good news!

On the other hand ... a large litter is much more taxing on the bitch. Madonna is a girl who will do anything I ask as much as she can. She's resting now for the big day, which could be ANYTIME now. The puppies are fully calcified. (For those who don't know what that means; the xray shows the level of development of the skeletal structure. These are ready to be born.)

I'll post up here as soon as there is news ...

Madonna is HUGE!! And we're still a week and a half away...

Indigo was Best of Breed in an entry of 22 on Sunday at the Council Bluffs Kennel Club show in Omaha. Shale is coming into coat and went RWB both days to the girl who took both majors (and BOB on SAT!) over the weekend.

We're now home to stay for the rest of the year!! Awaiting babies!

Minneapolis Convention center show is this coming weekend. Samoyeds are on at 12:30 on Saturday, Nov. 30, and 12:15 on Sunday, Dec. 1. We'll be part of the Meet the Breed a couple hours before that, where you can pet sammies!!! Come by our grooming set up after we show and chat!

October 26-27, 2002
Sioux Falls was fun! CH Hawkwind's Dark Side of the Moon BISS (Indigo) went Best of Breed both days, capped off with a Group 1 on Sunday in a very tough working group!  Indy always manages to surprise me!

October 23, 2002
Madonna is definitely showing many changes. Mostly, 'leave me alone.' Perhaps we should call a baby Dietrich... Anyway, she's sleeping all the time, and is the last one to drag herself off the couch for any reason. Even food is not a big deal, although her appetite is certainly healthy.

Back from the national. LONG trip! 1175 miles each way. Whew! Onyx got a 3rd in Futurity, although her sister never did manage to have 4 feet on the ground at the same time....and Onyx BARELY did once!

Best of Breed day (Sat.) was definitely special. 180 champions, with the king of the pack being CH Sassillee's Midnight Special from  California. Awards of Merit are given to the last 18 dogs left standing after all the cuts. These are considered to be the best of the best in the breed in that judge's opinion. For the second year in a row, CH Hawkwind's Dark Side of the Moon BISS got an AOM, one of 7 given to bitches by John Ronald this year. A very cherished award ...

Congratulations to the Minnesota dogs who did well! They include a Tundra Winds girl owned by GJ who won her class and impressed us all! Barb Gage's Bucca took a 1st in Weight Pull, with her lovely Summit boy placing 4th in his class. I think Julie Dunkle's Articross bitch got a leg in agility. Lynette's lovely Moonlighter girl won RWB! Wow! I may have forgotten someone, but Minnesota made a lovely showing at the national in Pennsylvania!

The art contest was well represented by Minnesota people. Sandi & David Gretzens won 2nd place with a lovely color photo of Jasper on Lake Superior.

Breedings each day. We're starting to think of names for Madonna & Bailey kids. I've had enough sex and alcohol jokes... thank you! But I DO have a bottle of Bailey's Irish Creme. I drink a toast to the new litter every night!

Now that we have Madonna's OFA Excellent hip rating (and elbows, and heart, and eyes, and brucellosis test...), she decides to go into season. I told her she is going to have puppies before Christmas. She looked at me kind of funny and started cleaning out the ears on one of Amethyst's (now 5 month old) baby girls. More info is at About Hawkwind/Nursery/Future Breedings ...

Indigo goes Best of Breed again over 43 Samoyeds (more than a dozen specials entered again) under breeder judge Judy Bennett. Breeder judge wins are truly cherished by all of us. Indy just liked the ice cream part ...

That's being shown only 4 weekends this year; garnering 4 very nice breed wins, 2 Specialty Best in Shows, and one Specialty Best of Opposite. Not a bad start to 2002. And we're still lovingly busy with puppies.... see the nursery for more news on the kids. (Who are getting their trips to Dairy Queen so they realize that car rides are FUN!)

May 10, 2002

Indigo wins her 3rd specialty; Samoyed Association of Minneapolis - St.Paul. SAMS entry was over a dozen specials, and this Best of Breed win is over a total of 55 Samoyeds present. j. Wanda Spediacci. Indy is finally coming into her adult coat. She must have decided she liked the ice cream after the show routine last time ...

April 7, 2002

Seamist's Amethyst of Hawkwind puppies born! 2 boys and 2 girls. Diary notes on this litter are under About Hawkwind; Nursery section.

February 2, 2002

Indigo blows all her coat. Looking leggy, she enters the Best of Breed ring in a specialty entry of 88. She showed like a dream! Maybe she will get the hang of this yet! She certainly loves the separate time she and I have together in the showring. Comes out Best in Specialty Show! Wow. Never expected it! But aren't all the biggest wins like that?

Much of the weekend was in the negotiations to get Amethyst bred. She is feeling a little blue on this day. Her boyfriend is definitely interested, but the timing is not perfect yet...

On Sunday, Indigo goes Best of Opposite Sex in the GMSF specialty under a Canadian judge. Amethyst gets a third in a large and very nice Open class. Her mind is on boys. One cooed while she was in the ring and her ears just perked up!
